the numbers do not look good for president obama. they look just as bad for his party overall. >> with two months to go before the midterm elections the poll shows that when it comes to registered voters, 47% prefer a republican, 45% prefer a democrat. pretty tight. >> what is not close is who will actually get out and vote. only 40% of democrats say they will vote compared to 53% of republicans, showing republicans are fired up for this election. >> one state these numbers could come into play is in nevada. that's the home of senate majority leader harry reid. >> reid is not only fighting a 14.3% unemployment rate in his state, he's also fighting one of the stars of the tea party. here's jonathan karl with more. >> reporter: meet the new sharron angle. feisty as ever but looking more like a candidate who can topple the majority leader. >> i'm a mainstream american and mainstream nevada understands that. >> reporter: for months, angle

pm your #1 choice. here are some stories to watch today on abc news. president obama takes his campaign to spur job creation to ohio where he'll speak about tax breaks for businesses. crews will continue battling a tricky wildfire northwest of boulder, colorado. nearly 100 structures have already been destroyed by the flames. bp releases an internal investigation into the blowout that unleashed the massive gulf oil spill. they'll reportedly assign blame for the disaster to bp itself and other companies involved in the well's operation. finally this half hour, the trees that are barking up a storm. a man in england is in trouble with his neighbors thanks to the trees on his property. >> they aren't just any trees, they're actually 35 feet tall and they're casting a dark shadow over his entire neighborhood. the bbc's jon kay has more now

raining. you can stand underneath and you can stay partially dry. but apart from that, i think it's appalling. >> reporter: neighbors say the trees are putting their gardens in the shade. so they've clubbed together to launch an action against the owner, david alvand. i've just spoken to mr. alvand at the door. he doesn't want to go on-camera. he doesn't want to speak to anybody. but he says he's done nothing wrong, this is his land, and he'd rather the media focused on politicians rather than somebody like him. this was david alvand eight years ago when he last fell out with his neighbors. back then he built a giant wall around the house and was forced by the courts to pull it down. worried by all the attention, he called in the police. the local authority hopes mr. alvand and his neighbors can reach a compromise among themselves. if not, more council cuts could be on the way. jon kay, bbc news, devon. >> the guy just wants a little privacy. i don't know, that's bizarre, i

well, in medical news now. in a new study that proves what women and myself have really known for years, that men are more forgetful. >> not surprised here. the study from the mayo clinic says as men age they are much more likely than women to suffer significant memory loss. here's linsey davis with more. >> reporter: leif bullison was one of those men who was forgetful when it came to birthdays and anniversaries. but in the past few years, his memory started getting worse. >> it's embarrassing when someone you should know walks in the room and says, hi, how are you? and i'll say, uh, well, i'm fine. you know. and act like i know who it is. >> reporter: he was one of 2,000 men and women over the age of 70 who took part in the study. the mayo clinic found 19% of the men suffered from mild cognitive impairment compared to 14% of the women.

mild cognitive impairment, or mci, is significant forgetfulness but not severe enough to interfere with daily life. >> this was a surprising finding to us. >> reporter: what also makes these new findings so surprising is women are more likely than men to get alzheimer's. fortunately for leif, his wife's memory is still intact. >> i try to remember to ask him daily, morning and evening, if he has taken his medication. >> reporter: doctors aren't sure why men are experiencing this memory loss more than women. but they're looking very closely at a possible clue. heart disease. >> when we look at the men who have mild cognitive impairment, they tend to have more of the vascular risk factors than women do. such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking history. >> reporter: the good news is these are areas where doctors can intervene and potentially diminish the risk of developing significant memory loss. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> of course there's so many theories for the differences.

>> terrible. terrible. the only thing you get out of that, really, is when it's raining. you can stand underneath and you can stay partially dry. but apart from that, i think it's appalling. >> reporter: neighbors say the trees are putting their gardens in the shade. so they've clubbed together to launch an action against the owner, david alvand. i've just spoken to mr. alvand at the door. he doesn't want to go on-camera. he doesn't want to speak to anybody. but he says he's done nothing wrong, this is his land, and he'd rather the media focused on politicians rather than somebody like him. this was david alvand eight years ago when he last fell out with his neighbors. back then he built a giant wall around the house and was forced by the courts to pull it down. worried by all the attention, he called in the police. the local authority hopes mr. alvand and his neighbors can reach a compromise among themselves. if not, more council cuts could be on the way.
